River Center Partners with Jupiter Farms Elementary on Creative Environmental Learning Experience

Jupiter, Florida - The Loxahatchee River District and Jupiter Farms Elementary School enjoyed a year-long educational partnership, recently culminating in a very special day at the environmental center.

Entitled "Project LEAP," third graders from Jupiter Farms Elementary School were recently hosted at the District's environmental learning center, The River Center. Noted children's author, Marianne Berkes, worked with students to make her Marsh Music, among her other literary works, come to life. Berkes led third graders on a journey of exploration of water ecosystems entitled "Water, Water, Everywhere.......Life In and Around the Loxahatchee River.

In its ninth year, Project LEAP:2010 has grown into a diverse unit of study which allows third grade students to explore the delicate and vital connections that exist in a local ecological treasure, the Loxahatchee River.

In fall 2009, teachers began the task of developing the unit of study, integrating several subject areas: Language Arts, Science, Math, and the Visual Arts. Both in and outside the classroom, students researched a variety of animals that live specifically in and near the Loxahatchee River. Information about life cycles, adaptations, food sources flowed in. The river's bounty led students to the realization that these ecological relationships are fragile and must be protected.

The ecological connection to the river was further deepened as third grade classed visited The River Center. There, students were lead through informative hands on science labs, and explorations of the Loxahatchee's many treasures. As an educational partner, the Center also provided teachers with curriculum development and support.

The River Center presents an exciting exploration of the Loxahatchee River and features some of the areas largest aquatic aquariums and displays. Three-dimensional presentations lead guests through the river's unique habitats, colorful history, diverse wildlife, and explain the river's environmental value to our community. Guests of all ages have the opportunity to learn where their water comes from, how it is consumed and how it is recycled back into the environment and the community. There are multi-media and live aquatic exhibits, and even a touch tank filled with aquatic life.

The River Center is located at 805 North U.S. Highway One in Jupiter. For more information about The River Center, its programs and volunteers and sponsorship opportunities, please call (561) 743-7123 or visit www.loxahatcheeriver.org.
