Jupiter, Florida - For the past sixteen years, the Loxahatchee River District has worked in partnership with the Jupiter High School Environmental Research & Field Studies Academy. The District provides internship programs, mentoring opportunities and field experience to students, who work along side scientists and technicians at the District's WildPine Ecological Lab, River Center, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and regional wastewater treatment and recycling facility. This month, the School District of Palm Beach County recognized individuals and business who contributed to the academic experience of students. The Loxahatchee River District was among those honored. The District was presented with a prestigious "Gold Medalist Award," for its contribution to Jupiter High's environmental studies program. For the last 39 years, the Loxahatchee River District has served a guardian of the Loxahatchee River, protecting and preserving the river through innovative water recycling programs, resource management, river research, habitat restoration and environmental education and outreach. The District's WildPine Lab conducts ongoing environmental research on the river, and this data is shared with other agencies and used to better manage the river. The River Center and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary provide free environmental education programs and special activities to further promote stewardship of the Loxahatchee River.
